Property distribution does not end the inquiry. The responsibility of which spouse pays which debt must be addressed.

There is always the motivation to divide household goods because of the emotional attachment and physical comfort they provide. No one forgets to divide investment and retirement accounts to retain the long-term security they provide. But the tendency is then to move on.

Debts associated with particular property easily stand out. The mortgage is associated with the house. The car loan goes with the car.

It is the credit card balances, signature loans and similar indebtedness that is not associated with any particular thing that is often over looked. These need to be taken into consideration as well.
