While on active duty, he spent a year and a half as a court-martial defense counsel where he dealt with a wide range of cases including child and spousal abuse as well as sex crimes. He was the Officer in Charge of the legal assistance office at Camp Lejeune. While at legal assistance, he dealt with a variety of family law issues including divorce, support, wills and estate planning, and consumer protection.

He then became the Staff Judge Advocate for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
